What a football-field valuation shows, and why a range beats a single number

How the football-field chart used in investment banking works, what each bar means, and how NeuraCap builds one from public comparables, precedent transactions and consensus estimates with every figure sourced.

Ask three advisors what a company is worth and you will get three numbers. Ask one good advisor and you will get a range, with a reason for every point in it. The football-field chart is how investment bankers show that range: one horizontal bar per valuation method, lined up so you can see where the methods agree and where they do not.

Reading the chart

Each bar runs from a low to a high value for one method, usually with a marked midpoint. The methods typically shown are trading comparables on EV/EBITDA and EV/Revenue, forward multiples on consensus estimates, precedent transactions, and a reference line for the current market price if the company is listed. Where the bars overlap is the defensible range. A method whose bar sits far from the others is telling you something: either its peer set is wrong, or the market is pricing in something the other methods miss.

Why the peer set decides everything

Trading comparables are only as good as the companies in the set. Grouping by index label or sector code produces peers that make money in different ways. The right test is business model: does this company earn revenue the way the subject does, with a comparable financial profile? The set has to be visible and arguable, because the comps table is the evidence, not the conclusion.

Precedent transactions: what acquirers actually paid

Deal multiples capture control premiums and real competitive processes, which trading multiples do not. They are also messy: consideration has to be rebuilt from disclosure, the denominator aligned to the same period, and deals with undisclosed terms excluded rather than estimated. When a multiple fails a plausibility test, the honest treatment is to leave it off the chart entirely, not to quietly winsorize it.

How NeuraCap builds the chart

  • A stated primary valuation basis per sector, declared up front, with EV/Revenue carried alongside as a cross-check.
  • Peer sets built on business model and financial profile, shown in full.
  • Precedent transactions normalized from filings and deal records, with implausible multiples excluded.
  • Every figure labelled as sourced, calculated or AI-interpreted, so the reasoning can be checked rather than trusted.
  • Export to PDF or editable PPTX, so the chart goes straight into a board or lender deck.

The point of the chart is not a magic number. It is seeing where a company sits, which methods support that view, and which two or three operating changes would move it up the range. That is the conversation a range starts and a single number closes.
