Demand Pay: An Ontario employment-law platform that drafts demand letters and court documents from the facts of a case

Demand Pay helps Ontario employees who have lost their job, and the plaintiff-side employment firms that represent them, move a wrongful-dismissal matter forward: calculate the entitlement, build the file, and draft the demand letter and statement of claim, with every document reviewed by a licensed Ontario lawyer before it is used. We designed and built the platform, and host it in Canada.

The business

Demand Pay is an Ontario legal technology company founded by a licensed employment lawyer. It serves employees who have been terminated and, through its Starling workspace, plaintiff-side employment law firms, sole practitioners and paralegals.

The problem

  • Most terminated employees accept the first severance offer without knowing what Ontario courts would award them.
  • For a law firm, a demand letter or a statement of claim means hours of drafting from consultation notes, emails, the employment contract and pay records.
  • Limitation periods and litigation deadlines are tracked by hand across many files.
  • Client information is sensitive and has to stay in Canada, and general-purpose AI chatbots can invent or misquote case law.

How we solved it

  1. 01

An employee platform: a free severance calculator and eligibility check grounded in Ontario decisions, then a guided intake that builds a demand letter from the facts of the termination, for review by a licensed lawyer.

  2. 02

Starling, the law-firm workspace: calls, emails and documents become one file with a case and contract analysis; demand letters and statements of claim are drafted on the firm's own precedents and in its format; and every deadline on the file is tracked.

  3. 03

AI drafting confined to the file: names, email addresses and phone numbers are replaced with codes before anything reaches the model, the AI provider keeps nothing under a zero data retention agreement, and counsel reviews every draft. The platform sends nothing on a firm's behalf.

  4. 04

Organizations, roles and secure logins for employees, lawyers and firm staff, Stripe billing for flat-rate packages, and documents in and out as PDF and Word.

How they use it to grow

  • The employee platform is live at demandpay.ca with a free calculator, a flat-rate demand letter package and a claims package for Small Claims Court.
  • Starling is in a pilot with plaintiff-side employment firms in Ontario.
  • Every demand letter and statement of claim is reviewed by a licensed Ontario lawyer before it is used.
  • We continue to build and run the platform with Demand Pay, from April 2026 to the present.

Security and compliance

Safeguards applied on this project

  • All data stored in Canadian data centres, in encrypted storage volumes, with backups inside a private network with dedicated firewalls
  • Personal identifiers coded before analysis and restored after, so the AI model never sees names, emails or phone numbers
  • Zero data retention agreement with the AI provider
  • Role-based access and secure logins; passwords hashed with bcrypt; TLS 1.2 or higher in transit
  • Counsel reviews every draft, and nothing is sent on a firm's behalf
  • Payments processed by Stripe; no card data stored on the platform
  • Built to comply with Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA)

Technology

  • Custom web platform
  • Large language models with anonymization
  • Ontario case-law database
  • Stripe
  • PDF and Word generation
  • Canadian cloud hosting
